BAS TerraSecurePlus FTTH fiber distribution cabinet for network layer 3

What is a fiber distribution cabinet?

A fiber distribution cabinet is a passive network node that organizes, splices and distributes fibers between feeder, distribution and drop cable areas. Unlike an active multifunction cabinet, it does not host transmission electronics. Its value lies in reliable fiber management, clear documentation and accessible maintenance points for FTTH rollouts.

Role in FTTH networks

In FTTH architectures the cabinet is typically located in network layer 3 between PoP or feeder infrastructure and the building access area. As an outdoor cabinet it must withstand weather, service visits, mechanical stress and unauthorized access while keeping fiber routing clear.

NVT, PoP, MFG and APL

A PoP aggregates larger network areas, a multifunction cabinet hosts active equipment, the fiber distribution cabinet distributes fibers passively, and the APL terminates the network at the building. Separating these functions simplifies planning, procurement and operation.

Variants and technical criteria

Key selection criteria are fiber count, reserve capacity, site conditions, security class, protection rating, material and internal splice management. BAS offers compact and high-capacity TerraSecurePlus variants for standardized rollouts and project-specific requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fiber distribution cabinet?

It is a passive outdoor cabinet for splicing, organizing and distributing fibers in FTTH or FTTx networks.

Where is it used?

It is typically used in network layer 3 between feeder infrastructure and the building access network.

How is it different from an MFG?

The distribution cabinet is passive. An MFG is designed for active equipment, power and operational technology.

Which protection rating is common?

Requirements depend on the location. TerraSecurePlus variants are typically designed with IP54 and RC2.
